If you’ve gone looking for “crystals for sleep” before, you’ve probably seen amethyst and selenite top every single list. Here’s the thing — when I tried keeping them by my own bed, they kept me wide awake. Both stones are powerful activators for the crown chakra, and for a lot of people that’s too energising right before bed. So while you’ll see them recommended everywhere, I’ve left them off this list in favour of stones that genuinely calm and ground rather than activate.
These are the five crystals I reach for myself, and the ones I’ve included in my Sleep Tumblestone Set

1. Smoky Quartz
Smoky Quartz is a wonderfully grounding stone. It works to dispel negative energy and recharge you while you sleep, and many people find it helps induce lucid dreams. If you wake during the night, this is the one to reach for — its steady, earthy energy helps settle racing thoughts so you can drift off again.
2. Lepidolite
Pop this one under your pillow. Lepidolite is known for decluttering the mind and easing insomnia and nightmares, leaving you feeling refreshed and positive come morning. It carries a naturally soothing energy, and is linked to alpha and theta brainwaves — the same wave patterns your brain produces as it eases into the early stages of sleep.
3. Labradorite
A deeply spiritual stone that supports better dreaming. As you rest, Labradorite works to recharge and rebalance your energy field. It’s also protective, offering a sense of safe passage during astral travel or vivid, lucid dreams — deflecting negativity and strengthening your aura from within.
4. Amazonite
Amazonite is thought to support your metabolism as part of deep, restful sleep. Keep it on your nightstand, slip it under your pillow, wear it as jewellery, or place a piece above your bedroom door to set a protective boundary that keeps negative energy from entering your space.
5. Clear Quartz
The master healer, this stone is highly programmable. Simply hold it in your hand and set a clear intention — whether that’s deep, restful sleep or stronger dream recall. Clear Quartz is well known for supporting dream insight and more vivid dreaming.
A Few Tips Before You Start
• Stick to three crystals at a time. Less is more here — start small and find the combination that works for you before adding more.
• Avoid pointed crystals like pyramids or sharp points near your bed, along with other high-vibration or crown chakra stones. They can be over-stimulating and may do more to disturb sleep than support it.
• Be cautious with crown chakra stones specifically — amethyst, selenite, and similar high-vibration crystals are brilliant for meditation and spiritual work, but I’d avoid them right by your bed. They’re designed to activate and open, which is the opposite of what you want when you’re trying to wind down for sleep.
Activating Your Crystals with Intention
Before placing your crystals by the bed, take a moment to set an intention. Hold each stone in your hand, close your eyes, and picture how you want your sleep to feel — restful, undisturbed, full of gentle dreams. You can say this silently or out loud. This simple step helps the crystal align with what you actually need it for, rather than just sitting there decoratively.
Cleansing Your Crystals
Crystals soak up energy, so it’s worth giving them a little reset once a week. A few simple ways to do this:
• Sound: a singing bowl or even a few claps near the stones clears built-up energy.
• Smoke cleansing: pass them through the smoke of sage or palo santo for a few seconds.
• Moonlight: leave them on a windowsill overnight, especially around the full moon.
A weekly cleanse keeps your sleep crystals working at their best, rather than holding onto the day’s stress alongside you.
